It’s early on Saturday morning 8 December 2012. I am leaving after lunch for Brooksville, FL, where I will rise early tomorrow for the Dirthead Duathlon.
The race takes place at Croom in Withlacoochee Forest, and fom what I understand, it is a mix of access-type road and single track, though I’ve never been there. For me, it will be my A-race for 2012 and a huge challenge. I am entering the Xtreme Duathlon (see below); I’ve never attempted such distance, especially in a race scenario, but I spent as much time as I could training, and I feel ready to give it my best effort. I did some math last night, and if I can keep the bike at or around 12 miles/hour and the run at or around 9-minute miles, I should be able to come in near the 4 hour mark. This won’t necessarily put me in a winning spot or on the podium, but the time would be respectable, which is what I am hoping to achieve. I am racing only one person: myself.
For the race there are three distances:
Xtreme Duathlon: 10 mile bike, 11 miles run, 22 mile bike
Middle Earth Duathlon: 10 mile bike, 7 mile run, 13 mile bike
Sprint Duathlon: 10 mile bike, 3.8 miles run
I’m racing to finish; I’m hoping to do well.
